Dissemination & Capacity Building for Sustainable Ecosystems and Livelihoods

The Department of Archaeology and Ancient History, Uppsala University, wishes to recruit an Experienced Researcher at a post-doctoral level.

The position is funded as part of a European Union FP7 Marie Curie Initial Training Network (ITN) Resilience in East African Landscapes: Identifying critical thresholds and sustainable trajectories – past, present and future (REAL).

The ITN is coordinated by Professor Paul Lane, Professor of Global Archaeology at the Institute.

Duties

To communicate research results to a range of audiences, and to conduct individual and collaborative research, including:

• Develop and implement appropriate strategies for disseminating the results and insights generated by REAL project researchers to diverse audiences and stakeholder groups, employ different methods including social media.
• Develop and coordinate a programme of public talks and radio programmes about the project.
• Analyse and interpret research data within a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) platform.
• Lead organisation of the final REAL conference in East Africa.
• Other duties as specified by the Project Coordinator

Qualifications and Knowledge

Minimally, applicants will hold PhD in an appropriate field (including relevant disciplines in the social and environmental sciences, environmental history, rural development, journalism etc.). To comply with the scheme’s mobility requirements, applicants should have no more than five years (full-time equivalent) of postgraduate research experience by the time of appointment.

Preference will be given to candidates who can bring a depth of experience and range of contacts to the role.

Expected Experience and Skills

• Experience of undertaking publicly evidenced high quality research AND/OR experience of working within developmental organisations at an operational or policy level AND/OR experience of working in a communications role
• Good track record of work in a sector relevant to the position
• Ability to work as part of a team and to work independently using own initiative
• Relevant peer reviewed publications
• Knowledge of, or interest in, sustainable agriculture and/or ecosystem conservation.
• Knowledge of, and contacts within, development organisations working on rural development.
• Knowledge of, or interest in, sub-Saharan Africa
• Very good communication skills in both written and spoken English
