PROFESSIONAL OFFICER

ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability – Africa is expanding its multi-disciplinary professional team through offering exciting new opportunities to experienced practitioners and technical experts in the field of urban development and sustainability at Africa’s Head Office in Cape Town. These professionals will provide advanced technical services and support to our growing network of cities, sub-national governments and local government associations across Africa. As part of our multi-disciplinary teams they will engage with national governments, international development partners, and the private sector and our other ICLEI officers around the world.

Requirements:

  • A degree (preferably BSc) or B.Tech in the fields of environment and/ or development (or equivalent), preferably at post graduate level.
  • A certificate/diploma in project management is advantageous.
  • Expertise in the following areas would be advantageous: climate change adaptation and/ or mitigation, biodiversity and ecosystem services, urban development, water and sanitation.
  • Minimum of 3 years relevant experience (it will be advantageous if the candidate has worked with government stakeholders before).
  • Computer proficiency.
  • Exceptional communication, writing & analytical skills.
  • A valid Code B driver’s license.
  • Candidate is a resident of South Africa or has a valid work permit/visa.
  • Candidate is able and willing to travel extensively both locally and internationally.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Willingness to learn and adapt to project requirements.

Key Performance Areas:

  • Co-ordinate, facilitate and technically contribute to projects as part of a dynamic team.
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills, especially on environmental/ developmental matters.
  • Compile and review technical reports.
  • Conduct thorough research and baseline assessments for use in various work streams.
  • Work with and guide local authorities to enhance and improve sustainability measures at the local level.
  • Coordinate and manage project related logistics.
  • Represent ICLEI at various national and international forums.
