GIS Specialist: Biodiversity Planning

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is seeking to appoint a highly motivated individual to provide specialist Geographic Information System (GIS) support and biodiversity planning knowledge to the SANBI and external parties in order to inform the development of policy and tools that support the management of biodiversity priority areas in South Africa. The appointment requires at least a 3-year degree, preferably in Natural Sciences, with GIS as an area of specialisation. The successful candidate must have a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience in GIS analyses for ecology/conservation/biodiversity/ environmental management. An added advantage would be if the successful candidate had completed courses in advanced GIS for environmental analysis or PLATO registration as a GIS professional.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES WILL INCLUDE:
• To lead spatial analysis in support of the Strategic Environmental Analysis for the Strategic Integrated
Projects;
• To perform spatial analysis and product development to support the implementation of the SANBI’s
programmes of work;
• To perform spatial analysis to support the integration of biodiversity information into policy tools of DEA
and other organs of state;
• To support broader spatial analysis and biodiversity planning processes in the SANBI;
• To lead spatial analysis for the refinement of existing approaches to planning and spatial prioritisation
used by Natural Resource Management (NRM);
• To support capacity development of GIS and biodiversity planning within the SANBI, and service
interpretation queries.
Please note that the successful candidate should have a good spoken and written command of English and another official language and have knowledge and skills in working with MS Office. Possession of a valid Code B driver’s license with at least one year’s driving experience is compulsory.
SANBI offers an annual salary R361 659.00 with additional fringe benefits.
