Title: Assistant or Associate Professor of Social-Ecological Systems.
The Department of Environmental Science and Policy in the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Davis is recruiting an Assistant/Associate Professor Social-Ecological Systems with a preferred emphasis in governance and quantitative approaches including but not limited to network analysis, mathematical models, computational models, and empirical research. The candidate will be part of a cluster hire in a new Network Science and Complex Systems group with membership that spans UC-Davis and provides opportunities for cutting-edge, integrative science. This is an academic year (9-month), Assistant/Associate Professor tenure-track/tenured position with teaching, research, outreach/engagement and service responsibilities.
Responsibilities: The Department of Environmental Science and Policy is seeking applicants with a background in political or policy science, network science, sustainability science, decision science, systems modeling, or other disciplinary or interdisciplinary programs with rigorous quantitative training combined with knowledge of environmental governance and policy. The appointee is expected to establish a competitively funded research program that uses social-ecological approaches to address critical or emerging issues such as climate change, food security, invasive species, water management, energy systems, transportation, or other issues. The teaching load is 2.5 courses per year, including a general environmental science/policy course (e.g. ESP1 or 10), a graduate methods course that complements the network science and complex systems group, and a new undergraduate course on sustainability and social-ecological systems. Capacity to teach courses in environmental impact analysis (ESP179) or environmental law (ESP161) is also desirable. The appointee will regularly advise undergraduate and graduate students. Participation in and development of outreach/engagement programs, and performance of departmental and university service is expected. This position is expected to work with extension educators and partners in allied industries.
Qualifications: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in a field of quantitative social science, network science, systems analysis, other discipline with rigorous quantitative training and knowledge of environmental policy and governance. Strong quantitative skills in network analysis, mathematical/computational models, and statistical analysis including programming tools for computational social science and data carpentry. Post-doctoral experience is preferred. Evidence of research excellence is expected. The candidate should have the ability to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses and the ability to develop and conduct extramurally funded research in integrated science teams.
Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.
