Belinda Reyers
SRC
Reyers is based at the CST where she works with colleagues from research and practice exploring the contribution of theories, methods and evidence from social-ecological systems research, to the development challenges facing Africa. Her work focuses on exploring the role of social-ecological feedbacks, cross-scale dynamics, non-linearities, and resilience capacities in achieving sustainable and equitable futures in the region. She also conducts empirical and conceptual research on the dynamic linkages between sustainability and equity, especially in the context of more complex, connected and uncertain futures (and present).
Reyers received her PhD from the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2001. She then worked as a senior lecturer at the Universities of Pretoria and Stellenbosch, South Africa until 2004. Subsequently, she established and led the Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services Research Group at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research in Stellenbosch, South Africa, where she worked as a Chief Scientist until 2015. From 2015 – 2018, Reyers was the Director of the GRAID program at the SRC. She was appointed as an Extra-ordinary Professor at Stellenbosch University and the University of Pretoria, South Africa in 2015 and 2018, respectively.
