TRECCAfrica addresses one of the world’s greatest environmental challenges: food security in the
face of climate change, resource depletion and loss of forests, wildlife and environmental services.
Applications from African citizens (including Diaspora) are now invited for the following
categories:
- Full degree Master’s degree scholarships
- Short term Masters and doctoral exchange scholarships (for applicants
currently enrolled in a Master’s or doctoral programme in the home university)
- Staff exchange awards (only for TRECCAfrica partner university academic and administrative
staff)
Successful candidates will enrol in a selection of programmes at one the TRECCAfrica partner
universities. Students from partner universities (known as Target Group 1 applicants) as well as
from any other African universities (Target Group 2 applicants) are invited to apply. The partner
universities are University of Botswana, University of Dar es Salaam, University of Ghana,
University of Nairobi, University of Nigeria Nsukka, Mekelle University (Ethiopia) and Stellenbosch
University (South Africa).
Globally, the challenges of food insecurity within the context of climate change are inhibiting
economic growth and human wellbeing. The food system is also changing as a result of complex and
dynamic interactions of a range of socio‐economic and environmental factors, including among
others, urbanisation, concentration of production, vertical integration, deregulation and economic
liberalisation. As demand for food is expected to double in the next 25‐50 years, food systems
will be forced to adapt to mounting challenges that current research and global institutions,
especially those in Africa are only starting to grasp.
TRECCAfrica intends to promote this adaptation by involving and educating young Africans
proactively in the process of developing, understanding and scaling new approaches through
‘transdisciplinary’ research. The project has to date awarded over 100 Masters and Doctoral
scholarships and exchange opportunities to some of Africa’s brightest young minds. A further 80
student and staff opportunities will be awarded during the remainder of the programme.
Ultimately TRECCAfrica’s impact will be transformation in our societies through social and
institutional innovation that stems from the application of problem‐solving knowledge generation and insight.
Scholarships cover visa and airfare costs, registration and tuition, comprehensive insurance and a
monthly stipend of €600 for Master’s students, €900 for doctoral students and €1,000 for staff
members. TRECCAfrica has been funded with support from the European Commission’s Intra‐ACP
Academic Mobility Scheme.
